The Only Way To Make Money On The Internet

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

There really is only one way to make money on the internet — sales.

Really it is the truth. Of course there are a lot of different variations in how and what you sell on the internet and another dramatic difference is the lack of the dreaded cold-calling forced on so many traditional sales folks.

At first glance your choices are pretty straightforward:

~ Sell other people’s products
~ Sell your own products
~ Sell yourself
~ Sell space on your web site, blog, or publication

Then things start to get complicated.

Even something as simple as selling products created by others takes on some unique twists on the internet and can quickly lead to complicated decisions. This choice falls into four main areas:

~ Selling as an affiliate to earn commission on each sale (you deliver customer to vendor)
~ Selling unlimited electronic products as a reseller to earn 100% profit on each sale (you are directly involved in sale)
~ Selling a limited number of products you bought at wholesale to earn the difference between your cost and the sale price (you are directly involved in sale)
~ Selling as a drop shipper to earn a percentage of each sale (you are the middle man in transaction)

Each method offers its own blend of benefits and drawbacks and you need to decide which suits your experience, time, and interest.

Selling your own products can be complicated as well by the need to organize issues such as payment processors and affiliate programs and advertising as well as customer service.

Selling yourself offers advantages in that you don’t need to deal with many of the problems involved in products — such as payment processors, large numbers of customers and all the complications that entails — but it can also be limiting (you only have so many hours in the day to accomplish the tasks or jobs that you take on) and requires the need for regular promotion to build and maintain your client base.

Finally selling advertising such as banners or text links or offering contextual or pay-per-click or pixel advertising can be a much simpler method of earning money but in order to earn a decent income from this source you must continually work to build and promote your web site, blog, and/or publication. Web sites and blogs that don’t consistently offer new, quality content quickly slip in search engine status and the loss of traffic then income follows even faster than you can say search engine optimization.

That is just a quick overview of the income opportunities available to you on the internet. Good luck with your new internet business whichever choice you make.

How To Block Hotlinkers

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Hotlinking or bandwidth theft is direct linking to a website?s file including images, video and others on the external website. It has become prevalent in the many forums and message boards on the web that allow users to insert images. The user resorts to hotlinking those when creating the tag as it is not possible to keep on the host site.

The Harm Caused by Hotlinking

When an tag is used to display a JPEG image found on someone else?s webpage so that it will appear on one?s own site, journal, weblog or forum posting, hotlinking is taking place. Other people might find it flattering to know that someone would be interested in a photo they have taken. This practice, however, consumes bandwidth and slows down the web server. When done excessively, the unknowing victim ends up footing an extra bill from his/her hosting provider.

One sure sign of hotlinking is the appearance of strange web sites in one?s referrer logs. When sites that wouldn?t normally be interested in one site are the ones that are appearing, then something is definitely up. When the offending sites are visited, photos owned by the other site are sure to be posted there. They do not make copies of the photo but rather link directly to the photo hosted on the website. Higher than normal bandwidth consumption is another sign. The log analysis tools might even show a higher number of hits for an image than for the page that displays it.

Blocking Hotlinking

The only fool-proof way to stop hotlinking is to turn-off one?s website. This is rather extreme and does not present a viable option to site owners. The best bet lies on creating an .htaccess file. Although there are many variations that exist on the specific regular expressions that can be written, they all accomplish the same thing. One can either throw the client a “forbidden” which means that the image is not there or the client gets to be redirected to another image which is usually something suitably offensive. Using the Rewrite Rule to forbid display of image is a simple rule which effectively blocks the display on remote sites. Redirecting requests for images from remote web pages to an image of choice on one?s website is taking this rule a step further. A good example of this is an image which says ?This image is stolen?. A person who tries to link directly to the original images of a site is inadvertently serving the redirected image to his/her pages.

Redirecting a browser from one file type to another is essentially not a good idea. The best approach is to make a separate version of the redirected image in each format that one uses on a site such as one for gif format, one in jpeg format, one on jpg format and so on. Each hot linked image is then redirected to the matching file type.

If one is feeling a little bit mischievous, other interesting images can be served to people hotlinking to one?s images. If the offender site is into selling, for example, an image that says ?Free Shipping Worldwide? would surely discourage the offender as the very reason for hotlinking is to make money, even in an unacceptable manner. No company can survive, much less earn with a guarantee such as shipping for free worldwide.

Some people recommend the white list approach. This is basically blocking all referrers except for those sites that are specifically allowed to do so. Again, this approach borders on the extreme as it blocks all requests, legitimate or otherwise. Accidentally blocking legitimate requests from search engines, feed readers and others would be very disadvantageous to the site.

The black approach is a better option as it intends to block some specific sites that are considered the worst offenders. A website owner has to find out if his/her website is on an Apache Server and if the use of .htaccess is allowed by them. A simple email to the web space provider will provide a swift answer. The .htaccess file should go into a website?s root directory on one?s web server.

Verification that everything is working properly on one?s site has to be done. Mod-rewrite is very powerful but it only needs one typo for hell to break loose. The block listed sites should be checked out if the stop image is being shown. It might be a nice twist to include one?s URL on the image. It wouldn?t hurt to get some free advertising in the process.

This is how to disable hot linking of certain file types on one?s site through .htaccess by simply adding the code below to one?s .htaccess file. Uploading the file either to the root directory or a particular subdirectory is necessary to localize the effect to just one section of the site.

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond%{HTTP_REFERER}!^$
RewriteCond%{HTTP_
REFERER}!^http://(www\.)?mydomain.com/.*$[NC]
RewriteRule\.(gif/jpg/js/css)$-[F]
The ?my http://domain.com? is to be replaced by one?s own. The above code creates a failed request when hot linking of the specified file types occurs. A broken image is shown in case of the image.

To block traffic from a single referrer:
RewriteEngine on
#Options+Follow-Symlinks
RewriteCond%{HTTP_REFERER}badsite\.com[NC]
RewriteRule.*-[F]

To block traffic from multiple referrers:
RewriteEngine on
#Options+Follow-Symlinks
RewriteCond%{HTTP_REFERER}badsite\.com[NC.OR]
RewriteCond%{HTTP_REFERER}anotherbadsite\.com
RewriteRule.*-[F]

JavaScript can be used to prevent right-clicking an image when already in a browser. This is a very weak defense though as people just need to switch JavaScript off and/or use a decent browser and it?s all there. Using JavaScript to write images into a page does not offer sufficient protection as hotlinkers can easily link to images once they know the origin URL.

FileProt is a protection script that is simple to set up and use. It does not allow anyone coming from unauthorized places access to certain files in one?s web server. This allows for the specification not only of unauthorized domains but pages in one?s domain as well. It can be specified to allow file or image download from certain pages in one?s domain. Hotlinkers and bandwidth leeches are completely blocked but this script is not intended for super high-traffic sites.

Download Tracker is a CGI script that manages downloads from one?s web page. Options include requests for email address and anti-leech system. It is multi-platform compatible and has a back-end control panel.

Scam Alert II: Domain Hijacking

Friday, October 30th, 2009

There’s a frightening new batch of scams going around now that can damage your reputation as domain “squatters” steal your domain name.

There are a number of ways the “game” is played. The first is entirely legal, if more than a little questionable. In this version, the name of a city or geographic area is grabbed by a domain squatter and pointed to… “sites that you wouldn’t want your children visiting.”

(We chose that term to avoid getting caught in a lot of spam filters for the use of the word “p-o-rn.”)

A prominent notice is placed on the sites, offering them for sale at prices that range from $2500 to as much as $500,000!

The idea here is that city officials will feel that enough damage is being done to the reputations of their towns that they’ll pay to keep them from being associated with that type of material.

It’s obviously safe to say that it’s not appropriate to pop those kinds of images into people’s faces while they’re looking for info on a completely different topic.

That’s where the pressure on the cities comes from, and why this is such a disgusting scheme.

In essence, the domain squatter says: “Pay us, or continue to watch as your city’s reputation suffers.”

Many would call this blackmail…

The second variation on the theme is not always legal. When someone takes a trademarked name (or variation of the spelling of one) or a famous person’s name, and does the same thing.

For trademarks or close variations, there’s a specific procedure for addressing the problem. (See the resource section at the end of this issue.)

For the names of famous people, there MAY be a remedy. But, it can be tricky — and expensive.

For example, if someone named John Jones registered http://WalterCronkite.com and pointed it to one of “those” sites, Walter Cronkite could probably force the domain away from him.

However, if someone named Steve Cronkite registered http://Cronkite.com and did the same thing, Walter Cronkite would have no recourse. It would be very hard to demonstrate that Steve registered the domain in bad faith. And if Steve’s son’s name is Walter, the same is true for http://WalterCronkite.com.

If you feel that your name is likely to be typed into a browser when people are looking for information on you, you should consider getting both the .com and .net versions of the domain if they’re available.

It will cost you a few bucks to prevent the problem. Fixing it, assuming you win, will cost you hundreds — if not thousands — of dollars.

And there’s no guarantee you’ll win.

~~~
A third version is a bit more benign. It’s common among members of affiliate programs.
In this version names very close to, or even including, the trademark are registered. The sites are created to drive traffic to the affiliates’ URL at the main site.
This may or may not be acceptable to the affiliate program owner. If it is, it’s a good technique for getting traffic. If not, it could get you into hot water. Check with the owner of the trademark before doing this.
Less benign is an alternative version of this technique where someone grabs domain names that are close to the trademark of a competitor and uses them to grab competitor type-in traffic. This is often done by finding out the most common misspellings of the real domain name or trademark.
Watch for people doing this with your domain.
~~~

Here’s the worst version of this — and it can hit anyone if they have enough traffic and don’t pay close attention to when their domain registrations expire.

In this situation, someone grabs expired domain names and points them to “those” kinds of sites. This is a “no lose” for the hijacker, as they will profit from the traffic even if the previous owner doesn’t pay the requested ransom for the domain.

The more traffic the URL gets, the greater the clickthrough value to the hijacker. This means more potential damage to the original owner — and a higher ransom to get it back.

In effect, your own popularity is your worst enemy in this case.

The solution to this one is simple — and very important: Don’t let your domain names expire!

Useful Resources:
If you find yourself a victim of domain hijacking, there is hope for correcting the problem.

For a more formal explanation of the legal aspects of this problem, visit
http://www.llrx.com/congress/100200.htm

For specific information on the UDRP (Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy), the procedure for taking domain names that are being used in violation of a trademark, see

For information on taking action under the Anti-Cybersquatting Act (A US law that provides for damages in addition to the less severe penalties of the UDRP) see
http://www.domain-name.org/cybersquatact.htm

If you have a famous name or trademark, the best defense is to make sure that you register the main variations in both the .com and .net form. The .org is probably only necessary if you are heavily involved with charitable activities.

Protect yourself. Scammers come up with new schemes all the time…

So, keep your eyes open.

5 Hidden Resources For EBay Users

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Many thousands of people making a living both buying & selling on eBay. Currently ranked as the 37 biggest site on the net (according to Alexa figures) eBay shows no signs of slowing down, even fortune 500 companies are opening eBay shops to sell surplus & unwanted stock. The following are five resources that I use personally & encourage you to use them to increase your eBay profits with ease.

Reports show that over 90% of searches on eBay are done using the search facility. What users do not know about eBays search factility is that by default it only searches the item titles - not the descriptions of the items. Remember this fact as it will show the significance of some of the resources listed below.

1) FatFingers

How professional a seller are you? Do you check your listings before submitting them or even does someone else proof read them for you? With millions of listings on eBays networks of sites at any one time, a small proportion of these listings contain errors - & a misspelt word is about the biggest error you can make.

Imagine your selling a Sony Television for example. What if you misspell the item as Sony Televisoin. Anyone who searches for the term “Sony Television” simply isn’t going to be presented with your item. Only those eBayers who search manually though the category will find your items. Needless to say that if people can’t find your item, they’re unable to bid on them.

FatFingers is a service you can use to find all misspelt variations of a term. Why would you need such a service?

Well obviously if an item has low visibility on eBay it’s also likely to have zero or few bids enabling you to snap yourself up a bargain. I’ve known people use this service to make a full time living, purely buying items cheaply and relisting them without errors.

2) eBay Pulse

Back to the search facility eBay pulse shows you the top 10 searched keywords in every category. It’s a real gem of a service, obviously by looking at the most widely used search terms you can see what eBayers are after. And if your selling in this category, by inserting some of these keywords within your title your items will be seen by more users.

The only thing to watch out with this service is make sure the keywords are relevant to your item, IF NOT DON’T USE THEM. How many times have you saw listings such as “SONY PANASONIC LG WIDESCREEN DIGITAL TELEVISION GUIDE”, - listings such as these are well thought out to earn high visibility from the way users search. Anyone searching for the items with any of the keywords will uncover your listings.

While it may lead to a high number of views, firstly fellow users will get annoyed if they find your item completely unrevealed to what they searched for, Secondly keyword spamming as it is known, is against eBay policy and will lead to your item being pulled. I use pulse daily with all my listings but make sure it’s relevant to your item first.

3) Keyword-Pro

Keyword-Pro is a commercial subscription service which is similar to eBay pulse. However, the main difference is Keyword-Pro offers a much more in depth list of relevant keywords. It lists the top 50 keywords for every category for both eBay.co.uk & eBay.com. This is a great addition, especially if any of the terms found in eBay pulse are not relevant to your item.

Keyword-Pro is available as both a web service or as a small program that downloads the list onto your P.C. It’s data is updated weekly to keep you informed of the latest search terms.

Details at Trading-Web-Solutions.com/keywords

4) Selling Manager

When you first open a selling account on eBay, options listed under the sell tab of eBay are enough to get you by. However, you can upgrade to a more in depth service known as Selling Manager. As eBay describes the service “eBay Selling Manager is our online sales management tool for medium to high volume sellers”. It allows you to track every eBay sale, customise your feedback comments, print shipping labels & much more. It saves me about four hours a week tracking orders and watching my sales.

Selling Manager is FREE on eBay.co.uk & has a small monthly charge of on eBay.com (after one a month trial free). Once I moved over to Selling Manager, there’s simply no way I would go back.

Details at: Click on services once you’ve logged into your eBay account.

5) eBay Popular Products

Here you can see, directly from eBay, what the most popular products are in several categories. an invaluable tool for an eBay seller.

Details at: http://product-index.ebay.com/best_selling_1.html

I hope you find these services useful & time saving in your goal for a successful home business on eBay. Remember, your most important resource is your time when your starting or building up an online business & if you discover any site, person or opportunity that can save you time give it the attention & serious consideration it deserves. Every top Internet marketers constantly educate themselves by purchasing & reviewing almost every new product released. The way I look at it, if an ebook costs $197 and the information within the ebook saves me this or allows me to make an additional $197 it’s well worth it - once you can do it once you’ll be able to repeat the exercise over and over again making repeated profits. If you discover a precious eBay related resource let me know & I’ll consider revising this list for future editions.

Good luck with your eBay selling.

How To Compose Articles Someone Would Want To Look At And Get You Results

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

There is no sense writing articles if you are not going to get positive results from them. Article writing, when done correctly, offers you an excellent chance to improve your overall Internet marketing efforts and make more money.

Your objective in writing an article is to offer useful information that your reader gets something from. When you do this you become known as an authority on the topic you are writing about.

So how do you compose articles that a person would require to read and get you the results you would like?

1. Keep your readers in mind when you create. You’ve probably read articles written by writers who seem to be very impressed with their wisdom.

However what they forgot was to write content that focused on the reader?s needs and interests. Writing articles that create an interest, and are based around solving a problem, are the types of articles your readers looking for.

2. One way to find out what readers would like in articles on is to hang out in discussion forums and see what kind of questions are being asked. This is a great place to come up with ideas for your articles.

Social network sites are another place to come up with article ideas. The point were trying to make here is when you write articles that are topical you stand a better chance of being people to read them.

3. Use search engine optimization in your articles. Although you write for your readers you can profit greatly from the search engines when you target keyword phrases correctly.

An easy way to do this is to create around one specific keyword phrase. Include that in the title and in the body of the article where search engines can find them.

Do not go overboard and stuff your article full of the same keyword phrase. Use variations of it and make it sound normal in a conversational tone.

4. Become an authority on what you’re writing about. One of the best ways to provide useful information is to create about what you know.

To do that you may need to subscribe to internet newsletters, Google alerts, and blog updates as they relate to the theme of the articles you are writing on. The more you know about what you are writing on the more of an expert you will sound on it. This will help you make more money online too!

5. Be appealing. You do this by adding humor, controversy, real-life stories, and other things to keep your readers attention. When you are proof reading your article if you find it boring chances are your readers will as well.

Do everything you can to be different from other writers and you will attract a loyal base of readers. This is several tips on how to get more results and make more money from your article writing efforts.
