Commencing A Successful Online Home Based Business

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Dreaming of starting a home business? There are a variety of reasons why people decide to go out on their own and start a home business. There’s a certain appeal of being your own boss that creates a feeling of independence that’s hard to deny. Starting a business is an everyday dream that not many are fortunate enough to realize in their lifetime. Unfortunately, not everyone is cut out to run their own business.

Working From Home
Working at home has its own appeal for many people ? but not for everyone. Even if you’re not cut out to operate your own business you can still work from home by taking a job that allows you to telecommute ? at least a few days per week. Technology is making a work at home arrangements more feasible and more accepted every day.

Challenges to Starting a Home Based Business Idea
Neither starting a business nor working from home is always a piece of cake. Starting a business can be a very risky proposition. You not only need to do your homework, you need to stay on your toes and remain alert to potential pitfalls as well as potential opportunities. Additionally, you need to be able to handle not having a steady income. This requires advance planning on your part and good money management. It also requires the support of your family or others in your household: without that there’s a strong possibility that either your business won’t succeed or you’ll have a poor work/life balance and family relationships could be severely strained, sometimes irreparably. You may need to work every day of the week to generate the income you need, but you still need to find time to enjoy your loved ones. An occasional getaway is a perfect way to do this without jeopardizing your Internet Marketing business.

Working at home requires an environment that’s conducive to getting your work accomplished. That means in addition to being self-motivated, you’ll need some control over noise and family interruptions. Depending on the nature of your business, you may need to make some substantial changes to your home’s environment in order to be successful.

You Need to Plan Before You Start any Business
Someone once said, “If you fail to plan, you should plan to fail”. Most new businesses don’t survive ? this is not doom and gloom, this is fact, and it’s a fact you need to be aware of so you can be among those who not only succeed, but who prosper. My 10 Steps Before You Start a Home Online Marketing Business will help you achieve your dream - or it may help you decide that you really don’t want to.

The purpose of completing the 10 steps is to determine if you have a workable business idea, if you can reasonably operate your business from home, to help you understand how much money it’s going to take, and to help you understand how your family feels about the whole idea.

You’ll benefit from completing the 10 steps whether you decide to go ahead with your home business idea or not. Make the most of it and, if you don’t have to, don’t rush it. It’s very tempting to think you can skip steps, but if you do you may regret it later.

As you go through each step, keep notes of what you’ve learned. At any point in the process you may encounter an insurmountable obstacle in your path that will require you to go back and either retrace a step or start all over.

If you decide to go ahead, your notes will come in very handy when it comes time to prepare a business plan.

How To Avoid Internet Marketing Scams

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

I consider myself an optimist. At least in my heart, I believe most people are good and want to help others. That’s a great quality if you want to let yourself get ripped off until you blow your retirement fund, kids’ college fund and any hopes of a nice life.

Fortunately, my brain, as undeveloped as it is, is much, much more skeptical. I assume that, at leat on the Internet, everyone has an angle. They all want to make money and I’m their personal ATM. Regardless how many “Dear Dave” letters or “To your success” salutations they send me, the want one thing: my money.

So, I guess I’m optimistically skeptical or skeptically optimistic. At any rate, I learned something from the people of Missouri. I am the “Show Me” person. Before I get involved in any Internet business, I need proof that it’s not a scam, it will work form me and it has staying power.

Before I go further, let me point out that this approach was developed over a period of time, after I got burned badly by scams, bait and switch schemes, false advertising, etc. Yes, I’m cynical, but I’m keeping my money where it belongs: in my wallet (or invested). Further, I’m finally making money, but that’s a different, although extremely happy, story.

Here are my __ steps for approaching a new opportunity:

1. Does it sound too good to be true? It probably is. Get rich quick schemes almost never work. This doesn’t mean you can’t check them out (details below), but promises of instant wealth are generally empty promises.

2. Look at the source for the advertisement. Is it from someone you know and trust? Then it may have passed the first hurdle and deserve more investigation. If not, you’re going to have to really do your homework, as discussed below. Here’s one rule I have, coming from my skeptical brain: if I receive from the same person many, many offers to join programs, I have no faith that he/she believes in the program. He/she is only in it for the affiliate commission of referring new members. In fact, I lose faith in all his/her emails and just delete them. Recently, I joined what I thought was a respectable web site for referrals/leads. Next thing I know, the owners (not members) are sending me over 10 emails per day asking me to join the next great web site. In just a week I’m receiving at least 50 emails about different sites. Do you think they really believe in these sites, or are they getting some kind of a kickback (e.g., affiliate commissions)? No one can truly believe in and promote that many programs!

3. Do your homework. When I see an opportunity that interests me, I do some digging. I Google the company. And its founders. I check for complaints with the BBB. I talk to as many members as I can. I try to find former members to whom I can speak. I ask members tough questions:

* How much are you making?
* How much do you spend on advertising? What type of advertising?
* What type of training do you get?
* What type of benefits do you get in your back office?
* How is the support?
* Do you get support from your sponsor?
* How much time per week do you spend on this program?
* It says X, Y and Z on your web site. Can you explain to me how X, Y and Z work?
* Why did you decide to join this program? Any regrets?

If they start waffling, change the subject or just refuse to give an answer — RED FLAG! I don’t work with people who aren’t honest with me, and neither should you. With that in mind, remember that there are certain things (processes for making money, etc.) that they probably can’t tell you as that is one of the benefits of membership.

If you find that the information you receive is different than what is advertised, then ask them why. Also, remember, if you’re talking to someone currently in the program, he/she is trying to get you to sign up. Be wary of his/her answers! Listen for tone and whether he/she is trying to change the subject. Don’t let your desire to make money get in the way of your instincts. If something feels wrong, it probably is. Also, don’t be surprised if they try to brush you off; they’ve been trained to get rid of the “tire kickers.” In other words, they only want money from people who don’t exercise intelligence and inquire about the program that they are considering joining. Remember, it’s your money; you have a right to know on what your spending it.

4. As mentioned above, don’t get too emotional. Sure, you want to make money, but your rational side must take over to determine if this really is a way for you to make money.

5. Limit the amount of programs in which you inovlve yourself. For some people, internet marketing can be addictive. You cannot effectively promote 50 products. You’ll exhaust yourself, and probably fail. Concentrate on one or two programs and consider expanding when you’re in profit mode. (I made this mistake, trust me.)

6. Be careful with advertising. There are lots of good advertising sources out there, and there are some that just don’t work. Consider joining an Internet marketers forum (they are generally free) and find a discussion group about advertising so you can find what others think are the most effective way to advertise/promote your web site. And be very careful with pay-per-click advertising. Sure, it’s very targeted advertising, but cost can be astronomical if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Learning The Basic About Internet Marketing: Keyword Positioning;

Hitting the Bull?s Eye in Internet Marketing

How? Simply do your homework: Perform proper keyword research.

Building up an online business is tricky. It is when you think you have the perfect formula for any real- time business to succeed, that you begin to realize your concept of traditional marketing does not work in online setting. While traditional marketing uses the gift of gab, Internet marketing utilizes the perfect combination of words or terms, unique for a particular website. In fact, the written word plays a pivotal role in online success.

On the internet, keyword positioning is strategic step: it can make or unmake your dream of hitting it big in a realm, where making money has limitless boundaries and anybody, sans MBA can challenge the masters. Search Engine Optimization, where keyword positioning is a primary factor, is the vessel that takes you to your destination.

By definition, keywords are searchable words or terms that refer to a specific subject matter. The main purpose of selecting keywords properly is to ensure that when an online user searches for a product, he types on the search bar keyword or phrases that are relevant to the information he seeks, AND exactly the keywords or phrases that would bring him to YOUR website ? obviously, with the end-view of making a purchase.

Targeting keywords for your website is a challenging task, but there are proven ways on how to come up with a list that can work. Here are a few tips:

What to target:

Target keywords based on the names of your product, the brands you carry, nature of your service, or by the use of terms that are popular among online users when they search for products or services similar to yours. Targeting only keywords that are highly relevant to your business assures you that the traffic you need is already sifted from the time-wasters.

You can avail of all the help you need online. There are tools available online that rank keywords according to the number of clicks they generate or how in demand these keywords are among the present crop of searchers.

Internet Marketing Service is an umbrella of strategies, such as article marketing and link building to name a few, but each of these strategies is anchored on pre-selected keywords and keyword phrases. The success or failure of the total marketing campaign begins on keyword positioning.

How to target:

1.)Analyze keyword demand.

This is simply determining, which keywords search engines have ranked high, depending on how many times these keywords were used by online searchers when they accessed search engines for information. However, it does not stop there.

The trick is not simply to determine, which keywords ranked high, but how these keywords relate to your present needs. Are these the keywords that can generate the desired traffic to your website?

2.) Create your own list of keywords based on your products, services and ideas.

As apples cannot fall far from the tree, so do your keywords. They should describe your products or service, not your competitor?s.

3.) Be challenged by the best.

Who are your competitors? Which keywords have delivered to them the most number of traffic? Make a list of these keywords and decide which ones you could target as well.

4.)Conduct a performance review.

Determine your past performance among search engines and find a list of your own keywords, which performed well in the traffic department. If you did it once, you can do it again!

Internet Marketing may be highly competitive, with strategies that never remain constant, but it has never swerved away from the basic: choose good keywords and these will take care of your online success.

Link Placements - How Often And How Fast

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

When you first start submitting articles or links to article and directory sites, you need to make sure that you don’t over do it. Even if you have great content, and your site is 100% legitimate, the speed at which you submit your articles and links can get you filtered out as search engine spam.

Below I’ve outlined a process to effectively and efficiently submit your articles and links and stay on good terms with article and directory site owners.

Before You Submit

Instead of trying to find submission sites on-the-fly, it’s much more efficient to do your homework first. You need to gather your resources, determine where you want to submit, and compile your list.

How you do this? First, if you’re submitting articles, my rule of thumb is to find article directories with a PageRank of at least four. It’s okay to submit to lower pagerank directories, just make sure they’re legitimate. Also, you might want to check out the Alexa rating for the sites you’re submitting to. One way to detect a possible link farm is to look at the site’s Alexa rating and compare it with its PageRank. If the Alexa rating is high (not as good) but the PageRank is high, then you know something is awry. If a site has a high PageRank it should also have a lower (better) Alexa rating.

Check the site’s cache in Google. Has it been awhile since Google has been around? It’s probably not a trusted site. Does the cache show a different site? Could be a PageRank redirect site. Avoid these at all costs.

Some common, high PageRank article directories include eZineArticles, GoArticles, iSnare. I don’t recommend signing up for article distribution services. You have no control over where your article goes if you submit to these sites. All it takes is one article on a spam site to ruin your reputation.

Your Submission “Speed”

I recommend that you submit one article at a time to at least 10 different directories. Don’t submit all the articles you’ve written to one site at a single time. By the time you’ve finished submitting one article to 10 different sites, you can go back and submit your other articles, moving down the list as you complete each one.

Make certain you read and understand the terms of service and submission guidelines for each article or link directory that you submit to. Some article directories only allow a few submissions per day. You need to adhere to the submission guidelines. It’s much better to be able to submit fewer articles per day than to do a massive submission and risk getting your articles deleted, or worse, losing your account.

After you’ve submitted to the first 10 directories, find 10 additional directories to submit to. Repeat the process I described above. Use should not submit a single article or link to more than 50 directories per day.

Maintain a Clean Submission Process

Your article and link submission process is a very important part of your linking strategy. You have to make sure that you understand what the directories want and that you follow their rules. You may think the rules are stiff, but it actually helps maintain a clean community.

Because of the proliferation of mass submission software, commonly used by those webmasters who are trying to make a quick buck, submission sites have come down hard on anyone who even hints of being a spammer. If you submit too fast to too many directories, I can guarantee that you will be labeled a spammer and your articles, or links, will be deleted.

So, do your research, compile your list of solid web and link directories, submit your articles and links like I’ve described above, and you’ll not only increase your search engine rankings, you’ll become a valuable part of the article and link directory community.
