We Answer A Regular Question Asked To SEO Consultants Far And Wide - How Do You Begin An SEO Campaign.

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

A familiar question to consultants providing SEO Services the world over is how do you start an SEO campaign?

The answer to this question depends on whether you are working with a new website, or a previously optimised website with well chosen keywords.
For the sake of this article lets suppose we are dealing with an existing site that is already established but not ranking too well, the keywords are carring good volumes of traffic.

Stage 1 - Analysis

Analysis is the first step for any successful SEO campaign, it allows us to ascertain the current state of play, both regarding offsite and onsite optimisation, it also gives me an indication how competetive the niche is by looking at the amount of competition sites and each keywords KEI index. And also allows me to identify the best keywords for that site.

By using SEO powersuite spyglass software I can also determine the number of existing links a page has, the PR of each of those links and additionally what anchor text was used for each link, handy information to have.

Stage 2 - On Site Optimisation

Onsite optimization begins with me checking the site for orphaned pages and either relinking them into the site navigation (if they are unintentionally orphaned) or more normally deleting them as they are no longer needed, Dead links are also removed, site map and robots files are checked and created or corrected where nessecary. All titles and meta tags are checked for correct structure and keyword density, I also ensure they are not duplicated. Then I optimise the page content, for keyword density, proximity and prominence aswell as correcting any obvious shortfallings with the sites usability, navigation and presentation are usually the main issues here and by correcting any obvious issues, I can have a helpful effect on the bounce rate, which in turn pushes up the websites conversion rates. (great news for any client)

Stage 3 - Search Submission

You would think that any existing site that has been around for a while would be listed in every search engine under the sun, but you would most likely be incorrect, I have included this step as it can really effect the traffic a site recieves over time. It is always worth submitting a website to all relevent search engines, it doesnt take long, and if each of the small search providers only deliver 3 hits per year, then that could add up to 1200 visits that you wouldnt have otherwise had. For the smaller search engines auto submission tools are fine (although I would never use them for the main search engines like Google, Bing, or Yahoo - manual submission only there).

Stage 4 - Link Building

Link building is by far the most time consuming part of SEO Services, this is because its never really finished, the moment you stop is the moment your rankings start to slide. The number of links required to see a page one position varies widely dependant on the keyword being promoted, some keywords you could have a first place ranking with only fifty links, other keywords you could probably have fifty thousand links and be nowhere close. A good technique to help ease the strain of link building is “link baiting” this fundamentally involves creating content that other people will want to link to, meaning they do the work for you, clever eh? Some of the best link baits can be free webtools like word counters, link checkers, favicon generators etc.

Search Engine Optimization Necessity And Its Consequences

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

If you want to make money with a website then you are going to need targeted traffic to convert and make that money for you and develop your Home Based Business Strategy. But for many people, there is a big problem with generating the right traffic. As everyone knows, organic search engine results are the best way to receive traffic without having to spend a lot of money. But with millions of websites and billions of web pages already indexed, how can you even begin to get that traffic?

Well the answer is not only simple; it can also be very complex. The term is known as search engine optimization. While the term specifically refers to developing your website in a manner that helps the search engines index the site the way you want it to, the physical act of Search Engine Optimization can be come quite complicated.

For starters, you have keywords. A keyword is simply the word that a visitor might type into the search engine to find your website. It can be a single word or a group of words creating a key phrase. In the old days, all that someone had to do to show up at the top of the results was to have more incoming links then anyone else. Today though, it is much more difficult. Now you need links, but they have to be from trusted and relevant sites. Instead of just links though, you need to use keywords for the links as a means of passing a vote to your site with that keyword. As a result, today, the person who has more incoming links from relevant sites with a particular anchor text will show up higher in the results.

However, this does not mean that the website or even the page in question will ever be indexed. The search engines can only index so many variables and with so many website running content management systems that produce pages dynamically, there tends to be too many variables. As a result, the concept of search engine friendly links was developed. This system makes use of a well-known server-side control mechanism which allows you or the system to rewrite the link in a manner in which there are no variables in it; only text. This is a good way of boosting your Internet Marketing.

Of course this is not all search engine optimization is about. You have things like headings and keyword density to tune. Having too many keywords may seem like a good thing; but its not. At the same time, you have to determine which keywords on a page are more important and show their importance through the use of bold fonts and headings.

In the end though, if you put forth the effort to take care of the finer details of search engine optimization for your website, it will allow the search engines to index your website faster and for the words you would like to compete for. It is a balancing act though because if you go overboard with the SEO, you can appear as spam to the search engines in which case you can be de-indexed.

Paid Linking ? The Benefits And The Drawbacks

Friday, October 30th, 2009

There are a number of methods to build website traffic, some good and some not so good. Text links are often considered to be the vehicle that helps to drive search engine traffic to your site, because the number and quality of links a page has is used to determine its relevancy and ranking. However, it is important to remember that text links can drive traffic directly to your site as well. Gaining links is always best done manually, in order to prevent links from bad neighborhoods and to ensure that you receive targeted traffic from your efforts.

SEO Link Profile

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is a popular method of building targeted traffic to a web page. By including well researched keywords on your web page, and building links using these keywords as anchor text, you can improve your search engine ranking. A link profile is a measurement of the quality and quantity of links that you have for each page on your site. This link profile is used by the major search engines as a guide to determine how relevant a web page is.

Why Links Matter To SEO

Building links is obviously important to any SEO campaign. Some marketers spend a lot of money paying for text links from other pages. Usually, the cost of a text link is determined according to the PageRank of the page ? the higher the PR the higher the cost. A per-term fee is paid for a month or a block of months and the text link remains until that time elapses.

SEO Link Considerations

- When looking to purchase a link solely for SEO purposes there are certain factors you have to consider.

- The linking page should not use a nofollow tag. These prevent search engine spiders from properly following the link and your link profile will not benefit from any link.

- Ensure that there are not too many outgoing links on the page. The more outbound links on a page, the less benefit your link will receive. Definitely ensure that there are less than 50 links, although this figure is still too high in reality.

- Page relevancy is always a consideration when linking. The more relevant the topic of the linking page, the more benefit your page will receive.

Debate has long been waged as to whether buying text links is an ethical, and viable, SEO procedure. Buying enough links to compete for major search terms may certainly prove infeasible because it can take a large number of links to really make a difference. For more specific or targeted keywords it is a possible option.

Shopping For Traffic Building Links

Text links aren’t only beneficial to SEO campaigns because they can directly drive traffic to a website without even considering SEO. Again, page relevancy is important because it helps to ensure that anybody seeing your link is interested in the topic of your page. Targeted visitors also mean better conversion rates and, therefore, higher ROI. But, there are other factors to consider with paid links for driving traffic.

- Page popularity should be measured in terms of traffic, rather than PageRank or any other factor. It is also unimportant whether links use nofollow tags as long as they can be clicked by visitors.

- Link placement should be considered, including the page where the link will be placed and the area of that page. Every page has certain hot spots and the more prominent a link is the more likely people will click on it. In-text contextual advertisements have proven both popular and effective.

Building Direct Traffic

Whether buying text links is considered ethical or not, it is a viable method of driving traffic to your site and while search engines may attempt to prevent the use of paid links in SEO campaigns they cannot negatively penalize your site for their use. If you are considering paying for text links, then you should try to ensure that you are doing so in order to drive traffic directly to your site via this link. Consider how well the link will perform, how many visitors it will produce, and whether they are targeted. Calculate an ROI and determine whether it is truly worth it.

Is Paid Linking Right For You?

Paid links certainly have their place. For a lot of sites, this place has proven to be in an SEO campaign. Care should be taken when buying text links for SEO, that the link is a genuinely powerful addition to your marketing campaign without relying on it to improve your search engine ranking. Check page popularity and relevance, link placement, and ensure that the link cost and results offer a good enough ROI to justify the purchase of the link in the first place. Paid links could provide you with good traffic if you find the right ones at the right price.

How To Do Effective Link Building?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Search engine optimization comprises of On Page Optimization and Off Page Optimization. As of now Off Page optimization has higher significance than On Page optimization for search engines like Google, Yahoo & MSN.

What is Off Page Optimization?

? Improving Link Popularity
? Using keyword rich anchor text
? Improving Google PR

What is Link Popularity & why is it required?

Link Popularity is defined as the number of incoming links your site domain has in each search engine. This is like the number of positive votes your site domain has on the internet. So, higher the number should be your primary goal. But you should make a note here that having a higher number of incoming links is not just enough. The quality of the incoming links matters a lot.

Search engines like Google, Yahoo & MSN would rank your website higher or lower in the search engine results depending on your link popularity.

How to check your Link Popularity?

In the search bar of any of the major search engines like Google, Yahoo or MSN type the following and press enter:

link:http://www.yoursitedomain.com (Please replace ?yoursitedomain? with your website?s URL)

This would give you an idea as how many websites on the internet linking to your website.
What is link building & what are the different types?

Link building is the off page optimization strategy to improve your link popularity. There are basically two types of link building.

? Reciprocal Link Building

Reciprocal linking means there is one incoming and one outgoing link, i.e. there is link exchange between your site and the linking site. You first link to the other website and request the webmaster if they would like to link back.

? Non reciprocal Linking

Non reciprocal linking is to have only the incoming link without your site linking back. This would carry more value than the reciprocal link. But, this does not mean that reciprocal linking is not worth to do. It has it?s importance. Non reciprocal linking is better but a little tougher to achieve.

How to do reciprocal link building?

You need to find the websites which has similar theme as yours but not direct competition and request a link exchange. Once you find the right websites then you add a link to these websites on your links page and send an individual email to each one of these website owners.

Now, you should take care of the anchor text, also known as linking text. This is the text which is displayed on the other website linking to your website.

The anchor text should be the best keyword describing your website and it has high value attached to it.

These are the three basic things you would need before you request a link exchange with the link partner websites.

Title: This is the anchor text
URL: The webpage URL you want the link to.
Description: Describing the purpose of your website in brief and do not forget to mention your keywords.

The next thing you should look into is the Google PR (Page Rank) of the linking webpage. The higher the Google PR the higher link value you get which would be converted to higher rankings in Google search engine.

Now, internet is an ocean and finding these websites, their Google PR and emailing them is a tough manual process. You can do this but may take years before you can build decent link popularity.
Is there a way out?

Yes! you bet!

There are quite a few SEO Software tools which would help you implement reciprocal link building. But making the decision as which SEO Software tool is right for you is the BIG question.

Each SEO software has it?s own limitations as what they can achieve. The best thing to do is if these SEO Software companies have a trial version, feel free to download and test it out. One another way is to read the honest SEO Software reviews at http://www.seo-softwares.com/seo-software-reviews.html. I personally recommend http://www.seo-softwares.com/seo-elite.html

Look out for my next article where I would talk about the easy ways to get a lot of non reciprocal links.

15 Keyword Marketing Strategies That Get Results

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

?Men of few words are the best men.? Those words are as true today as they were when Shakespeare wrote them. This less is more approach also applies to search engine strategies. The tired strategy of keyword seo stuffing simply doesn?t work with today?s search engines, however less isn?t necessarily better either; as an internet marketer you need to develop cohesive and relevant keyword marketing strategies that work with today?s ever changing search algorithms.

As internet marketing strategy professionals we are constantly bombarded flooded with various keyword marketing strategies. In this post I have decided to focus on 15 keyword seo strategies that will get results if employed properly.

1. Remember Last Day Keywords ? Keywords that focus on timing such as such as next day delivery or last minute valentines day flowers are often underutilized and have low competition. Of course you need to be able to change content readily to accomplish this type of traffic generation.

2. Focus on Brand Specific Keyword Optimization ? Depending on your product, using brand-specific keywords probably is a better option to receive qualified traffic even if you’re using your competitors brand, ride along traffic is not spoken about much but often practiced.

3. Attract Qualified Customers ? If you are in a specific niche industry such as organic foods; make sure not to entirely focus your internet marketing strategy on generalized food products. The same thing would apply if your company is a consulting firm specializing in remote IT Support. Focus your keyword optimization strategy on remote IT or SaaS delivery type keywords more so than IT keywords.

4. Use Use Relevant Keywords in the Anchor Text Links ? Keywords in backlinks are more relevant than the meta tag because the link will generally point to a highly significant page.

5. Create a Keyword Seo List Before Writing ? It is far easier to research and write keywords into the copy than to write the copy and try to fit in the keywords. Keyword marketing shouldn?t be a challenge!

6. Spread Your Keywords Around ? Take the time to put high ranking keywords into your page titles, URL?s, logos/pictures, anchor text links and value propositions.

7. Use Bold, Italics and Underline During Keyword Optimization ? The use of bold, italics and to a lesser extent underline can increase the importance of your keywords.

Search engines see bold and italic words as being more important and relevant to the copy.

8. Take Advantage of Singular and Plural Words ? Typically the singular use of a word will have more searches per month than the plural of a word. However, numerous internet marketing strategy studies have shown that more than 5 times the number of buyers actually use the plural vs. the singular case. People that do research frequently use the singular use of a word. It is good idea to have both uses of a keyword in your web pages.

9. Improve Page Rank With Internal Links ? If a certain webpage in your website needs a boost simply link it using internal links. Relevant, keyword rich internal links can boost organic rankings for that page over time.

10. Get a Second Listing on Google ? For many low ranking keywords you can get a second Google listing indented below the first. Typically, all you need to do is write an article or FAQ page then link it to the main page.

11. Sprinkle Long Tail Question Keywords Into Your Content ? Many people ask questions in search engines. Simply add a few who, what, where, when, why or how questions pertaining to your products. For example how long does aspirin last would be a unique keyword if you manufactured aspirin or wrote a blog about the positive affects of aspirin.

12. List Your Part or Model Number ? Technical buyers as well as average consumers will look for a specific model or product. If the model number has hyphens or periods write it multiple ways i.e. 73-AE90 could also be written 73AE90.

13. Keep Up With Trends ? Sites like Yahoo Buzz, Google Trends, eBay Pulse and Trendwatching.com will actually allow you to see what keyword marketing trends are popular right now. Google News also allows you to subscribe to a news feed based upon keywords you choose.

14. Check Out The Competition ? Take a look at the number one ranked competitor on Google and what keyword marketing strategy they are using. To view a websites keyword seo strategy simply go to VIEW in the main toolbar in internet explorer, then select SOURCE. It will bring up the source code of the competitor. Look for the term META KEYWORDS for the list of keywords the site is using.

15. Use Keyword SEO Tools ? There are many keyword tools out there; Wordtracker and Google Keywords are two of the top keyword seo tools. You can also buy various software packages that list data on keywords.

There are thousands of different keyword optimization strategies out there but with some diligence and implementation, each of these recommendations can help you gain traction with your search engine marketing. The industry changes almost daily; an internet marketing strategy that worked a year ago might not work today because search engines are constantly changing their algorithms. If you are truly serious about keyword optimization and ultimately growing a business, take the time to learn the little nuances and never stop reading what?s new.
